A retired four-star general, Michael V. Hayden served as director of the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency when the course of world events was changing at a rapid rate. He was also the country’s first principal deputy director of national intelligence and the highest-ranking military intelligence officer in the country. In his book, The Assault on Intelligence: American National Security in an Age of Lies is “a blistering critique of the forces threatening the American intelligence community, beginning with the President of the United States himself, in a time when that community's work has never been harder or more important.”
